In 1937, Sir Richard Cave served as a Gold Staff Officer at the coronation of King George VI. Before the second world war he joined the Territorial Army, serving with the Wiltshire Yeomanry. In WW2 he was classed unfit for active service due to a hearing problem and became the recruiting officer for the Rifle Brigade. He was very successful in recruiting from the upper classes and his recruits were dubbed “Cave’s Cadets”.

In 1953, after his wife Mary was diagnosed with MS, he founded the Multiple Sclerosis Society where he served as President.

He was Secretary of the Association of Lieutenants of Counties from 1946-59 and 1964-77, served as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater London in 1973, was Crown Examiner in Peerage Cases at the House of Lords (1953-77), Taxing Officer of Judicial Costs House of Lords ( 1957-77), Principle Clerk of the Judicial Department House of Lords (1959-77), Fourth Clerk of the Table (Judicial) House of Lords (1965-77). He died in 1988.

All of his awards are in original boxes and the group comes with copy entries from Debrett’s Handbook 1984.

A fantastic and unusual group!
