An O.B.E., Lifesaving group of six to Lieutenant Colonel Guy Frederick Dale, Commanding Officer, 5th Bn. Cambridgeshire Home Guard, late 2nd Dragoon Guards, who received the Royal Humane Society Medal for saving a woman from drowning in Palestine.

Royal Humane Society Medal in Bronze, approved 6 May 1920:        
  'The woman had fallen into the Wadi Nusia which is 40 ft wide, 7 ft deep & with strong current.  He went in & caught her being dragged out to mid stream & got her out 50 to 60 yds down stream.'


Guy Frederick Dale was born 05/11/1898, attended the Uppingham School 1913-16, Pembroke College Cambridge 1916-17, and Sandhurst.  He was commissioned into the 2nd Dragoon Guards (The Bays) on 24/04/1918 and served on draft conducting duty, the BWM being his only World War I medal entitlement.  Dale was promoted to Lieutenant on 24/10/1919. 

He received the Bronze Royal Humane Society Medal for rescuing a woman from drowning in Palestine on 23/01/1920.  He served with the Queen’s Bays on the Malabar expedition in 1921.  Dale was placed on half-pay in due to ill health on 16/09/1925 and retired in 1930 upon his completion of a period of five years on the half pay list.

Dale was the chairman of Dale’s Brewery from the death of his father in 1930 until he sold the company in 1955.  He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1942 and commanded the 5th Bn. Cambridgeshire Home Guard during World War II.  He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Cambridge on 07/07/1947.  Dale was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire on 11/06/1960 as the Chairman of the County of Cambridge and Isle of Ely Territorial Forces and Auxiliary and died in 04/10/1969.

Only 7 officers and 110 other ranks from the 2nd Dragoon Guards received the India General Service Medal with Malabar clasp.
