The recommendation reads:
‘On the night 10/11 Oct 44 two motor pls and a sec of carriers of “A” Coy 1 RB supported by a troop of tanks of 5 DG were holding the village of GEFFEN. This force was twice attacked by a bn of enemy inf supported by arty and mortar fire.
During the first attack, Sjt Langenschied (Pl Sjt of one of the motor pls) set the highest example of tenacity and bravery. He was manning and firing a .30 Browning mounted on the front of his Armd Bde vehicle and remained at his post despite heavy enemy fire of all descriptions including grenades thrown at short range.
As the second attack developed one of the pl vehs received a direct hit from a shell and immediately burst into flames. He personally drove away another burning vehicle from very close proximity to the one in flames and which was full of amn and exploding A tk mines and PIAT bombs, and supervised re-parking the other vehicles, all the time under heavy fire. He then put out the fire in two houses which had also been set ablaze, the flames from which were lighting up some of our posns and giving their location away to the enemy. Having got the fires under control he went to the rescue of civilians trapped in a cellar by blazing petrol.
He then returned to his pl area and again got the .30 Browning into action against the attacking enemy.
Not only did his prompt actions save the vehicles and civilians but more important still the fire from the weapon he was manning had a decided effect on the course of the battle. Both attacks were beaten off.’

Langenschied was wounded in action in Tunisia on 8 April 1943 and was killed in action in Germany on 8 April 1945, exactly 2 years later.
