A second world war DSM and MID casualty medal group of seven awatded to M.24922 Chief Engine Room Articifer Ewart John Hart, Royal Navy, who was killed in action on 1st February 1943 when HMS Welshman was hit by a torpedo.

Killed in action - 1st February 1943

Recommendation for the Immediate award of the Distinguished Service Medal:
Ewart John Hart, Chief Engine Room Articifer (Pensioner) C/M24922
 'For courage and devotion to duty. He has consistently set a good example to other ratings in the Engine Room of H.M.S. Welshman.'

London Gazette:
D.S.M., 8th September 1942
 'For bravery, skill and sustained devotion to duty in action against the enemy in H.M.S. Welshman.'

M.I.D., 11th June 1942
 For outstanding zeal, patience, cheerfulness and for never failing to set an example of wholehearted devotion to duty without which the high traditions of the Royal Navy could not have been upheld.'


On 1st February 1943, while transporting stores and personnel to Tobruk, HMS Welshman was hit by a torpedo fired by U-617, commanded by Albrecht Brandi. Two hours later she sank east of Tobruk, with the loss of 155 lives including that of Ewart John Hart. 


The medals are in good condition and are mounted for display.
