Herbert John Hall Amery was born in Pontypool on 27th April 1913. He was the son of saddler Herbert Mark Amery (b.1869, Staunton – d.1951, Cardiff) and his wife Alice Mary Hall (b. 1869, Pontypool). At the time of the 1911 census Herbert and Alice were living in Market Street, Pontypool.

The Amery family can be traced back to John Amery, born in Trull, Somerset c.1835. By the time of the 1881 census John and his wife Caroline were living at Hill Side Farm, Mamhilad, Monmouthshire where John was employed as the farm bailiff. John and Caroline had three children; Charles (b.1861, Staunton, Mons), Herbert Mark (b.1869, Staunton) and George Albyn (b.1873, Staunton d.1947, Bedwellty.

There is a Herbert Amery listed as matriculating at the Faculty of English, Oxford University, Oriel College in 1934.

The next known event in Herbert’s life is his army commissioning, listed in the London Gazette on 24th October 1941, two years into the Second World War. Hebert joined the Intelligence Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant and served until 1954 when he relinquished his commission and received the Honorary rank of Captain.

Herbert next appears in the London Gazette on December 31st 1980 when he received the OBE (civil) in the New Years Honours List.

Just over 10 months later Herbert was also decorated by the Senegalese government, being awarded the ‘Ordre National Du Lion in the Class of Chevalier’. The National Order of the Lion had been founded on 22nd October 1960 as Senegal’s highest honour, awarded for exceptional merit and service to the nation and is both a civil and military honour.

The certificate Herbert received alongside the award states that he received it for his work as a ‘Conseiller Technique au Ministere de L Enseigement Superieur st de la Recherche Scientifique’, which translated is a ‘Technical Advisor of Higher Scientific Research’. As Herbert was aged 68 at the time of the awards they probably mark his retirement.

There are entries for Herbert on various websites listing Company Directors, which describe him as Director (1991-1999) of Milaflores Investments Limited, based in London, which operated between 1962 and 1999. The records list Herbert as being born in 1913, which matches the other records.

Hebert, who does not appear to have married, died in Camden Town early 2003, just short of his 90th birthday.
