London Gazette: 3rd September 1943 (DFM)

Street served with No. 262 Squadron which was a flying boat squadron based in South Africa from 1942 until it was transferred to the S.A.A.F. in 1945. The squadron was formed on 29.09.1942 in Liverpool. He was awarded the DFM for safely returning his aircraft to base on one engine over a distance of 100 miles.

The group comes with original newspaper cutting regarding his award with a photo of him inset. Also comes with copy LG entries for award and later commission, and a brief history of the 262 Sqdn.

The newspaper article reads: Sergeant Raymond Herbert Street, who is awarded the D.F.M., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Street, of Anstey, Spital Park, Bromborough, and during his flying experiences has completed much operational work. "Throughout his tour of duty," the citation states, "has executed his tasks with a high degree of skill, determination and devotion to duty. In May he participated in a successful operational sortie, and the safe return of his aircraft to base on one engine over a distance of 100 miles, was largely owing to his sterling work." He is only nineteen, and has decided to make the Air Force his career, having joined the service for twelve years. He was educated at Wirral Grammar School, and immediately on leaving school in 1940 entered Cranwell, the R.A.F. training college. He is now wireless operator air gunner. His father is a director of Messrs. H.T. Woodrow and Co., Ltd., manufacturing stationers, of Liverpool, and his elder brother, William, who is twenty-four, was one of the original raiders of Kiel, and was presented to the King. He is now a prisoner of war, having been shot down while over Belgium.

The medals are in good condition and are swing mounted for wear.
