Army of India Medal (Clasp - Ava) named to T. Garvin, 44th Foot.
Thomas Garvin attested for service with the 44th Regiment of Foot at Athlone, County Westmeath on 28.08.1821 at the age of 18. He subsequently spent a total of 21 years and 189 days reckonable service by the time of his final discharge on 07.05.1843. The majority of his service was spent overseas. Garvin was never promoted and remained a Private throughout his military career. In 1829 he transferred to the 16th Regiment of Foot. At the time of his discharge his military conduct and character was described as having been 'Indifferent'. He was twice 'Convicted' for 'Habitual Drunkeness', and the regimental defaulters book was liberally peppered with repeated instances of drunkeness and drink related transgressions.
Only 96 Ava clasps were awarded to all ranks of the 44th Regiment.
The medal is in good condition with ribbon. Comes with copy service papers and roll.
