A first world war casualty medal pair awarded to Lieutenant John Gordon Birney, 1st Bn. Highland Light Infantry, who was killed in action on 11th January 1917, on his 19th birthday.

John Gordon Birney was born on 11th January 1898 to John Ramsay Birney (Lieutenant Royal Engineers) and his Wife Sarah Duncuft Birney Nee Worthington in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. 

He was the Grandson of Colonel John Birney of Redcastle, on his Father’s side, and on his Maternal side the Grandson of General The Honourable Sir Henry Ramsay KCSL, CB, Brother of the 12th Earl of Dalhousie.

John was educated at Temple Grove, Winchester and in September 1911 he joined Winchester College. Here, he was in C House and was a prominent member of the school football team. In March 1915 John left Winchester College and entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst in April 1915 having passed 21st.   

He was gazetted Second Lieutenant to the Highland Light Infantry on 15th September 1915 and left to join the Battalion in Mesopotamia, February 1916.
