The medal is in good condition.
George Robert Carter was born in Caversham, Oxfordshire on 7 July 1865. After working as a clerk and serving in the 2nd Oxford Rifles (Volunteer Force) Carter enlisted in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons on 1 January 1886. He was promoted Lance Corporal 17 November 1887, Corporal 9 May 1889, Lance Sergeant 28 May 1890, Sergeant 1 September 1890, Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 May 1892, and Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant 7 June 1896. Carter graduated from the School of Musketry, Hythe, in April 1890. He received his 2nd Class Certificate of Education on 6 June 1886 and his 1st Class on 29 October 1895.
Carter served in South Africa three times, 30 September 1887 to 12 November 1890, 24 October 1899 to 4 July 1900, and 28 November 1900 to 6 April 1903. The last two times were during the Boer War. The Inniskillings saw considerable action but mostly as smaller detachments.
Carter appears on the Inniskilling Dragoons Queen’s South Africa Medal roll twice. The first time he is listed as ‘2556 QMS Carter R.’ qualifying for the CAPE COLONY and ORANGE FREE STATE clasps. This explains why his QSA is missing the initial for his first name. The second time he appears as ‘2556 Q M Sergt Carter G.R.’ qualifying for the TRANSVAAL clasp. Carter also qualified for the King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps.
Carter was discharged as medically unfit on 5 May 1903, his conduct described as “Exemplary.” He served a total of 17 years, 125 days. Having served less than 18 years, Carter did not qualify for the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
Carter married Florence Carr on 5 April 1893, but they divorced on 12 July 1899. They had no
children. After leaving the Army, Carter lived in Solihull, Warwickshire, and worked as a
warehouseman. In 1939, he married Ada Rebecca and settled in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He
died on 10 February 1947.
