Killed in Action - 17th September 1939

Charles Leverson Brooks was born 8th November 1887 and was from Swindon, Wiltshire.

He served at Jutland on H.M.S. Nottingham during the first world war. His papers show he was repeatedly absent over leave and was disrated and deprived 1 GCB 27/7/17 and again 4/2/27.

During the second world war Charles Leverson Brooks, along with his brother Henry, was among those lost on the occasion of the sinking of the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Courageous in September 1939 when it was struck by two torpedoes from the U-29 south-west of Ireland on 17th September 1939, the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Courageous went down in about 20 minutes, taking with her 518 officers and ratings out of her original complement of 1200 men - Hitler was at Wilhelmshaven to personally congratulate and decorate the U-29’s crew on their return.

Sadly this was the first time in their 22 years service that the brothers had sailed together on the same vessel.
