Killed In Action - 22nd August 1944 (St. Desir War Cemetery)
The group comes with his duty bed plate, original condolence slip, a photo of him in uniform and a letter to his wife which gives details of how he died.
In the letter it states:
'your husbands company were taking the lead in forcing a river crossing. They got across but had to withdraw, and during the withdrawal Sgt. Cumbley was wounded. The Coy. Commander and stretcher bearers did their level best to get him away but they were still under fire and your husband and one of the stretcher bearers were killed.'
The medals are in good condition with ribbons.
