Ernest James Tennant was born in Walsall in 1888. He enlisted in the Royal Horse Artillery at Birmingham in 1906 at the age of 18. Following service in Ireland, Tennant went to India and was among the troops selected to form part of the personal bodygaurd for King George V and Queen Mary for the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Tennant returned to the UK in October 1912 and the following year joined the Stoke-on-Trent City Police.

With the outbreak of war in 1914, Tennant was recalled and went to France with the BEF, being attached the the 2nd Cavalry Division..

In 1916, while in charge of a party unloading ammunition at a railhead, Corporal Tennant was mentioned in Field Orders by Brigadier Sir Henry Plumer for very gallant conduct in rescuing wounded and extinguishing fires caused by an enemy bombing raid on the railhead.

In 1917, now a Sergeant, he was severely wounded in action at Lens, receiving a gun shot wound to his left thigh. He was operated on in France and eventually returned to England, where he later rejoined his depot at Woolwich. While there, he was promoted to Sergeant-Major and went overseas again.

In December 1918, Tennant was discharged to the Army Reserve and rejoined the Stoke-on-Trent Police. He retired as Superintendent after 32 years service.
