An exceptionally rare original tinder lighter as found in the 1914 Princess Mary Christmas gift tin.
These lighters are among the rarest items associated with the Princess Mary gift tins. Originally, Asprey & Co was contracted to supply half a million units. However, the flint stones used in the lighters were sourced from Austria, and as the war escalated, supply lines were cut. With no replacements available, the contract was only partially fulfilled, and the lighters were substituted with other items – making surviving examples today extremely scarce.
Featuring the royal "M" monogram (for Mary) and stamped “XMAS FUND 1914”. The reverse bears the maker’s mark: Asprey London. Complete with its original yellow rope and flint the lighter remains in excellent, unused condition.
